ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: I Ran 50 Prompts Through All Three. Here’s What I Found.

Everyone has an opinion about which AI is “best.” Most opinions are vibes. So I decided to do something different: run the exact same 50 prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, then measure the results objectively using our free AI Output Comparator.

Here’s what 50 head-to-head matchups revealed.

The methodology

The 50 prompts covered 10 categories (5 prompts each): – Writing emails – Explaining technical concepts – Brainstorming creative ideas – Summarizing long text – Coding help – Marketing copy – Tutorials / how-to guides – Analytical thinking – Translation – Casual conversation

For each, I pasted the three responses into the comparator and recorded the winner per criterion (Balanced, Concise, Detailed, Clear, Creative, Positive).

The verdict by category

Writing emails

ChatGPT produced the most polished email structures — proper greetings, clean paragraph breaks, professional closings. It won 3 out of 5 on the “Balanced” criterion. Claude, however, wrote emails that felt human. Its tone was warmer, less templated, and more likely to get a real reply. Gemini surprised here: it was consistently the shortest, which is exactly what you want for quick replies. If you write to executives who skim, Claude’s nuance pays off. If you write quick internal replies, Gemini’s punchiness wins. For client-facing formal emails, ChatGPT’s structure is hard to beat.

Explaining technical concepts

This was Claude’s strongest category. It consistently broke down complex topics using analogies, progressive complexity (starting simple, building up), and reader-aware language. ChatGPT was solid but tended toward textbook explanations — accurate but dry. Gemini defaulted to bullet-point summaries that were fast to read but lacked depth. For teaching or documentation aimed at beginners, Claude won 4 out of 5 on “Clearest.” For quick reference docs, Gemini’s brevity was actually useful.

Brainstorming creative ideas

Claude dominated this category with the highest lexical diversity scores across the board. Its ideas were more unexpected, more varied, and less generic. ChatGPT produced reliable brainstorm lists but they felt like “top 10 Google results” — safe and predictable. Gemini gave fewer ideas but often included one genuinely novel angle buried in a short list. For creative work, Claude is the clear winner. For structured ideation (like content calendars), ChatGPT’s organized approach works better.

Summarizing long text

Gemini was the undisputed champion here, winning 4 out of 5 on “Most Concise.” It consistently extracted the core message in fewer words without losing critical information. ChatGPT’s summaries were thorough but often just slightly shorter than the original — defeating the purpose. Claude balanced between the two, offering summaries that preserved nuance better than Gemini but weren’t as tight. If you need a TL;DR, Gemini. If you need a summary that captures subtlety, Claude.

Coding help

ChatGPT won this category overall, especially for well-known languages like Python and JavaScript. Its code blocks were cleaner, better commented, and more likely to run without modification. Claude was close behind and actually excelled at explaining why the code works — its inline explanations were superior. Gemini produced working code but with less explanation and occasionally used deprecated methods. For production code, ChatGPT. For learning and understanding, Claude. For quick snippets, any of the three works.

Marketing copy

This was the most evenly split category. ChatGPT produced professional, conversion-oriented copy with strong CTAs. Claude wrote copy that felt more authentic and less “marketing-speak” — better for brands that prioritize trust over hype. Gemini’s copy was punchy and headline-friendly but lacked the emotional depth of the other two. The sentiment analysis from our comparator showed Claude consistently scoring higher on positive tone without feeling forced. For landing pages, ChatGPT. For brand storytelling, Claude. For social media hooks, Gemini.

Tutorials / how-to guides

ChatGPT was the strongest tutorial writer — clear numbered steps, consistent formatting, and comprehensive coverage. It won 4 out of 5 on “Most Detailed.” Claude’s tutorials were more conversational and included helpful context about when to use each step, which beginners appreciated. Gemini’s tutorials were the shortest and most scannable but sometimes skipped important nuances. For documentation, ChatGPT. For beginner-friendly guides, Claude. For cheat sheets, Gemini.

Analytical thinking

Claude showed the strongest analytical reasoning, frequently presenting multiple perspectives before reaching a conclusion. Its responses felt more intellectually honest — acknowledging trade-offs and edge cases that the other models glossed over. ChatGPT provided thorough analysis but sometimes felt like it was trying to cover every angle without committing to a perspective. Gemini was the most decisive but occasionally oversimplified. For strategic decisions, Claude. For comprehensive reports, ChatGPT. For quick takes, Gemini.

Translation

All three performed well for common language pairs (English-Spanish, English-French). The differences emerged in nuance: Claude preserved idiomatic expressions better, ChatGPT was more literally accurate, and Gemini was fastest but occasionally missed cultural context. For literary or marketing translation, Claude. For technical translation, ChatGPT. For quick “what does this mean” translations, Gemini.

Casual conversation

Claude was the most natural conversationalist by a wide margin. Its responses felt like talking to a thoughtful friend — it asked follow-up questions, showed genuine curiosity, and avoided the robotic patterns of the other two. ChatGPT was friendly but often felt like it was performing friendliness rather than being genuinely engaging. Gemini was the most terse and factual, even when the prompt called for casual chat. For chatbot applications, Claude. For FAQ-style interactions, ChatGPT. For quick factual answers, Gemini.

The overall scoreboard (out of 50)

| Criterion | ChatGPT | Claude | Gemini | |—|—|—|—| | Balanced | 14 | 22 | 14 | | Concise | 8 | 10 | 32 | | Detailed | 28 | 16 | 6 | | Clear (easy read) | 18 | 24 | 8 | | Creative | 13 | 27 | 10 | | Positive tone | 19 | 23 | 8 |

Key takeaway: Claude leads in 4 out of 6 criteria. Gemini dominates conciseness. ChatGPT owns depth and detail. There is no single “best” — only “best for this task.”

What this means for you

There’s no “best” AI — there’s only “best for this specific task.” The smart move is to:

1. Identify what matters most for the task at hand (depth? warmth? brevity?) 2. Run the prompt through 2-3 models 3. Compare with an objective tool like the AI Output Comparator 4. Pick accordingly

How to do this comparison yourself

Step-by-step: 1. Pick a prompt you actually use often 2. Open ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini in separate tabs 3. Paste the prompt in all three 4. Copy each response 5. Open our free AI Output Comparator 6. Paste each response in a separate input 7. Click “Compare Now” 8. Switch criteria to see which model wins each angle

In about 90 seconds, you’ll know more about which AI fits your work than 99% of users who just stick with their default.

The biggest surprise

Honestly? How different the models really are. Before this experiment, I’d assumed they were 80% interchangeable. They’re not. Each has a distinct personality, and using the same one for everything is like having a single tool for every job in your kitchen.

Try the comparator, find your patterns, build your workflow.
